CaFi: An Andriod Infotainment Killer?

Here in the US, there is a slowing trend for third party infotainment systems. What are infotainment systems you ask? Infotainment systems are collections of technology built for automobiles. Typically, they are connected to the car to read various measurements and readings via the automobiles CAN bus. These messages can be as simple as "LIGHTS ARE ON" or "RADIO IS OFF"... but they can also send very technical and critical messages such as "DEPLOY AIRBAG" or "APPLY BREAKS". The common infotainment leaders here in the US (Ford SYNC and GM's OnStar) have done a good job so far with their current security models and we have not seen many major issues with their systems to date.

The reason why we bring up security once again is that all of this technology is built on a very OLD platform. This platform has been around for a while and can easily be integrated with third party infotainment systems. The Ca-Fi system is an infotainment system that has not been built by the major car manufactures. This worries us. If this unit ties into the auto's underling CAN systems, this might be a security risk.. Oh well. We have until 2012 to worry about it.
